Author Elizabeth Cusack reimagines the life of Sappho in new poetic autobiography, ‘Lovers Leap’
A modern poetic voice breathes fresh life into ancient legend, revealing Sappho’s passions, heartbreaks and resilience
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Elizabeth Cusack returns to the literary limelight with the “Lovers Leap” (published by Xlibris), a daring and imaginative narrative that re-envisions the life of Sappho, the iconic poetess of ancient Greece.
Told in five parts, this collection captures Sappho’s innermost desires and agonies through lyrical poetry that is both modern in form and timeless in theme. The book brings to life Sappho’s personal experiences — her romantic entanglements, artistic triumphs, and the fragile, human heart behind her enduring legend. From her youthful love for a music teacher to her tragic romance with Phaon, and the tender complexity of her relationships with the young women of her chorus, Sappho’s story unfolds with haunting vulnerability and strength.
“The ancient Greek world is not so different from our own,” the author states. “Sappho was subject to the same passions and betrayals, imbalances and inequities, the same blows to the heart, the same struggles to survive losses as we are today.”
“Lovers Leap” comes at a time of renewed scholarly interest in Sappho, as newly discovered fragments of her work circulate in academic and literary circles. With a foreword by classical scholar Barry B. Powell, the bookbridges ancient and contemporary worlds, reminding readers that love, longing, and loss transcend centuries.
