Poetry by Elizabeth Cusack

Elizabeth is inspired by contemporary lyricists and poets such as Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, Ann Carson, Sylvia Plath, Edna St.Vincent Millay, Rilke, Rimbaud, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, Louise Labe, and many others including the ancient Greek poetess Sappho

II

Now I know why Eros,
Of all the progeny of
Earth and Heaven, has
Been most dearly loved

Sappho

When I look he is there
Holding a white rose in his hand
A vagabond lover back again
And I am in the garden
With my doves in the breeze
And I say, Oh, please
Keep your love coming constantly
We will float this wave out to the sea.

I did not stand apart
When love came dancing down
I did not know
There could be such joy
Like geese floating on the sea.

When he plays his game
And wanders through my house again
He reminds me of a nameless cat
I feel so strong in his arms.

I say I must die
For without him
There is no song
No reason to go on
He stops me in the sand
Looks in my eyes
And kisses me—
My love will not depart
I wish to live with you
And be happy in this world.

We dream into the night
We travel through time
I play every role for him
Please lie down
And love me again
Come bring your flowing spirt
Into the light of dawn
Come, I see you clearly
Your heat burns through me
You strip away my doubt
In the early light of dawn
In the clouds that float by
Love, you are so near!

In the Foreword to “Lovers Leap” Barry Powell compares Elizabeth Cusack’s work to that of the Greek poetess Sappho, and notes that the ancients referred to Sappho as the 10th Muse. After reading Elizabeth’s poetry I would name her as the 11th Muse! Her work is a pleasure to read…intense, vivid, and conveys deep emotions that really resonated with me. I highly recommend this book… I can’t wait to finish writing this review so I can re-read her poems again!

Romance, intrigue and excitement await inside Lovers Leap. The moment you enter Sappho’s island, you are swept into the sky. In this five part poem, Elizabeth Cusack takes you on a journey through the life of a passionate poet.

Elizabeth Cusack’s latest exploration of Sappho and the perplexing dilemmas of love is a combination of prayerful entreaties to Aphrodite to bring that solace and then reminiscences of surviving the loss. These are poems of what love offers, of having love, and then joy eclipsed by circumstances as impersonal as war and as intimate as betrayal. Difficult times require clarity of insight, and in these poems we hear, as though through a tangy sea-borne breeze, a voice both ancient yet alive with passionate vibrancy. – Harry Kollatz Jr., “Carlisle Montgomery”

We need Sappho more than ever, and Elizabeth Cusack understands this. Her lines dance as light reflecting off the tops of waves while also conveying physical desire, the celebration of intimacy, and the dynamic vicissitudes of love in all its variations — Harry Kollatz Jr., author of Carlisle Montgomery, Richmond, Virginia

Author Elizabeth Cusack reimagines the life of Sappho in new poetic autobiography, ‘Lovers Leap’

A modern poetic voice breathes fresh life into ancient legend, revealing Sappho’s passions, heartbreaks and resilience

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Elizabeth Cusack returns to the literary limelight with the “Lovers Leap” (published by Xlibris), a daring and imaginative narrative that re-envisions the life of Sappho, the iconic poetess of ancient Greece.

Told in five parts, this collection captures Sappho’s innermost desires and agonies through lyrical poetry that is both modern in form and timeless in theme. The book brings to life Sappho’s personal experiences — her romantic entanglements, artistic triumphs, and the fragile, human heart behind her enduring legend. From her youthful love for a music teacher to her tragic romance with Phaon, and the tender complexity of her relationships with the young women of her chorus, Sappho’s story unfolds with haunting vulnerability and strength.

“The ancient Greek world is not so different from our own,” the author states. “Sappho was subject to the same passions and betrayals, imbalances and inequities, the same blows to the heart, the same struggles to survive losses as we are today.”

“Lovers Leap” comes at a time of renewed scholarly interest in Sappho, as newly discovered fragments of her work circulate in academic and literary circles. With a foreword by classical scholar Barry B. Powell, the bookbridges ancient and contemporary worlds, reminding readers that love, longing, and loss transcend centuries.

Now I know why Eros,
Of all the progeny of
Earth and Heaven, has
Been most dearly loved

Sappho

When I look he is there
Holding a white rose in his hand
A vagabond lover back again
And I am in the garden
With my doves in the breeze
And I say, Oh, please
Keep your love coming constantly
We will float this wave out to the sea.

I did not stand apart
When love came dancing down
I did not know
There could be such joy
Like geese floating on the sea.

When he plays his game
And wanders through my house again
He reminds me of a nameless cat
I feel so strong in his arms.

I say I must die
For without him
There is no song
No reason to go on
He stops me in the sand
Looks in my eyes
And kisses me—
My love will not depart
I wish to live with you
And be happy in this world.

We dream into the night
We travel through time
I play every role for him
Please lie down
And love me again
Come bring your flowing spirt
Into the light of dawn
Come, I see you clearly
Your heat burns through me
You strip away my doubt
In the early light of dawn
In the clouds that float by
Love, you are so near!
